Daught appeared in the waiting room doorway.

“Hey.” He didn’t know what else to say.

“Hey.” Even though the word was innocuous, it carried the sadness of her day.

He opened his arms to her, and she stepped into him, pressing her body against his. She held tightly on to him, as if she feared being swept away in a flash flood of emotions. And he held on to her. It felt so damned good. He’d never hugged anyone this way before.

When she stepped back, he wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into his side as he guided them out the door and to his car. She leaned against him, and he could feel the exhaustion in her movements. He wished he could shoulder this pain for her. He was an old pro at pain management, but all he could do was be the shoulder she leaned on.

Once they were both settled in the car, he placed his hand over hers, the touch oddly soothing to him when his intention had been to comfort her. “I’ll take you home.”

She turned in her seat and looked at him. Her eyes filled with tears. She reached up and swiped them away as if they were an annoyance. “I know this sounds silly, but I don’t want to go home. I can’t reconcile the images of what I saw today and the memories of the good times we all had at my apartment. It’s too overwhelming. I need to be somewhere else right now. But I don’t know where else to go.”

He understood. “How about I take you to my place?”

She gave him a horrified look, and for an instant, he thought maybe he’d been reading way too much into this whole thing between them. But then she turned her hand underneath his and twined their fingers together. An electric thrill shot straight through him.

“I’m sorry I called you and forced you into this…” She worked to smother a sob. “…this… mess. You shouldn’t have to take care of me. Especially after two years of nothing.” Her chin trembled like a child trying to be brave, and she squeezed his hand. “But I’m afraid of being alone. Every time I blink, I see their bodies on the backs of my eyelids.” A tear—one among the hundreds she’d cried today—glided down her cheek and dripped onto his soul.

The thing about grief—it sucked. There was nothing to ease the pain. Nothing to say that would take the hurt away. Gently, he wiped the wetness with his fingers, feeling the warmth against his skin.

“Whether we go to my place, your place, a hotel, or Timbuktu, I’m not going to leave you to deal with this alone. We’ll get through this together. I’m done being apart from you.” His words came out as holy-book truth, which they were.

Her lips tilted upward in what should’ve been a smile but wasn’t. “Then you better strap in. I think we’re in for a bumpy ride.”

“I’ll hold on to you and you hold on to me, and we’ll make it through to the other side.” He spoke with the certainty that lived in his gut. In his life, there had been few things he’d ever been certain of—but she was one of them.

Author Bio:

Seven Things about Abbie Roads:
1. She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what’s most important, right?
2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending… after torturing them for three hundred pages.
3. By day she’s a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well… Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does–the keyboard might get a little warm.
4. She can’t stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That’s major annoying. Right?
5. She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.
6. She lives in Marion, Ohio with her favorite fellow and two fur babies.
7. Being a published author is a dream come true for her.
