With a sigh, Ash says, “I don’t get it. You guys make it look so seamless, and you’ve been through way worse hell than we ever have. I feel like I’m fighting a losing battle sometimes.”

“Ash, Noah and I work hard for what we have. There’snothing remotely easy about how we got here. We started out on the wrong foot, then continued to trip and fall for almost a full year before we got our act together. Add in the media scandal and the revelation that ‘Oh shit, we’re gay!?!’ and that makes for a rough road.”

“But you guys still got through it. Even with the aftermath of your attack, you were still there for each other.”

I tell him, “We’re not your typical example of love against all odds. And by the way, I wouldn’t suggest you follow our path. You’d have to be crazy. Both of you are only getting started. Be patient. Sometimes you have to let things work themselves through and not force it.”

He says, “Yeah, I hear you. We were blindsided by the baby and not prepared. Not this soon. To be honest I feel a little cheated that we didn’t get more alone time together before the baby.”

“Talk to Gemma, she knows you best. You can move forward from there.”

“I have to tell you something. I was a little surprised by the fact you didn’t know about Noah looking into adoption.”

“I know it’s important to him to have a family, especially with his broken home upbringing. I would never deny him that,” I say.

“But you don’t feel ready to take that leap of faith yet?”

“Honestly, no, I don’t,” I admit.

“Now, that gets me, because you, of all the people I know, seems the most suited to be daddy material,” he says.

“Like I said, we all have our struggles we’re dealing with. I’m fortunate that we love each other enough to try to work it out.” 

With my words, I see Ash release a slow grin. “See what I mean? You said that so easily. It’s great to see you both so comfortable in your own skins. No bullshit,” he says. “How is all that going, anyway? Are you still getting crap from the homophobes?”

“It’s nowhere near as bad as when we first came out. I’mnot naïve, though. We’ll always have problems with people accepting us. I figure, that’s their issue. Not ours.”

He says, “Us heteros could learn a thing or two about real love from guys like you. You love not because it’s the easy thing to do but because the struggle is worth it.”

I reach across the table to grab another handful of chips. “We’d do pretty much anything for each other. That’swhat’s making this separation so hard. I want him near me all the time but that’s not great for a relationship either. You have to give yourselves space to breathe now and then.” I take a swig of my beer.

“When Gemma was away during the summer for those two weeks, I damn near lost it from wanting her so badly. Being the horndog I am, I can only imagine what it must be like for two dudes.”

“Dude, you don’t even want to know. I’m keeping KY Jelly in business.” We crack up on our overshare and the tension is broken.

Ash asks me shyly, “I know this is none of my business, and feel completely free to tell me to go to hell, but I’ve got to know, is it really so good with Noah that you can give up women for good?” He sits back on the sofa awaiting my answer.

“Yes,” I say with no hesitation.

“No shit, eh?” He looks incredulous.

“No shit.” I lean forward and take another sip of my beer, looking him dead in the eyes.

“Huh, okay. I can respect that.”

“The main problem we have now is the time difference. We mostly text to stay in contact.”

“Do you guys ever sext?” he asks, waggling his eyebrows.

“Sext? No, we haven’t. I think he’d be too paranoid about them getting leaked,” I answer honestly.

“You should try it. It’s fun, and it helps to alleviate the stress, if you know what I mean. You could leave him a random sexy message, so when he wakes up, he’s thinking about you,” he says.

“I probably wouldn’t know what to say. Or worse, the thing would autocorrect and ask me to kick him instead of kiss him. Sexy moment ruined.”

“Just try it. You’d be surprised how creative you can get.”

Later that evening, I send the sext.

Author Bio:

T.L. always hated math, so it was a good thing she had a way with words. Since she was a shy and quirky kid; words were her best friends. She would imagine entire worlds in her head and talk to herself endlessly. Her mother wondered if she was speaking with ghosts for a while.

Her older sister was a voracious reader of trashy romance novels and would pass them down to her after she had finished them. T.L. was the only 10-year-old kid sitting in class reading “The Stud” by Jackie Collins during reading time. Oddly enough, she never got called out on it.

As she grew older, her tastes evolved, but one thing held fast; her undying attachment to love stories. One day out of the blue, she decided to write the love stories she always wanted to read instead of searching for her story. Since then, writing has been a dream fulfilled for her and she could not be happier.

She enjoys writing about love, regardless of gender and is a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community.

T.L. calls the Pacific Northwest her home and enjoys the quiet rural life of her little oceanside home with her playful/crazy husband and their giant dog Noah.
